Source: www.maerklin.de 39058 - Mess locomotive 05 001 For speeds of 150 km/h in both experimental and scheduled traffic, two high-speed locomotives were built at Borsig in 1935 with the 2C2 wheelset sequence and fully streamlined cladding. From March 8, 1935, the LVA Grunewald had the 05 001 at its disposal, followed by the 05 002 on May 17, 1935. They broke all standards for standard locomotives that had been in effect up to that point. The drive and coupling wheels measured 2,300 mm, three cylinders drove the second coupling gear set (outer cylinder) and the first coupling gear set (inner cylinder). The locomotives were approved for a top speed of 175 km/h and produced around 3,400 hp. Both completed an extensive test program at the Locomotive Testing Department (LVA) in Grunewald, during which the noble racers reached speeds of up to 180 km/h. On May 11, 1936, the 05 002 was on the way back from Hamburg to Berlin with a special/measuring train and exceeded the magical 200 km/h mark between Friesack and Vietznitz (Wittenberge – Berlin route). The measured speed of 200.4 km/h was a world record. The DRG then put one of the two 05s into scheduled service on the Hamburg – Berlin route. From the end of May 1936, the Altona depot hauled the FD 23/24 long-distance express train pair between the Hanseatic city and the Spree metropolis with an 05, which had previously been driven by the “Hamburg” type SVT. The 05 001 and 002, together with the later added 05 003, remained in the West after the war and were subjected to main inspections at Krauss-Maffei in 1950/51. The 05 001 and 002 lost their power shell. They found a new home at the Hamm depot with a three-day roster and from 1951 had the longest run between Hamburg and Cologne at 478 km. From 1953 onwards they even ran a whopping 703 km between Hamburg and Frankfurt (Main) for a short period of one year. At this time the machines also achieved their peak performance. In the summer of 1955, the machines in the F train service shone with the F 1/2 “Hanseat”, the F 13/14 “Dompfeil” and the F 16 “Sachsenross”. Just eight years later, the machines had become obsolete as a splinter class. The 05 001 was spared the trip to the scrapyard. It was again equipped with half-sided streamlined paneling and taken to the Nuremberg Transport Museum.
