After several years of rudimentary train service, the new German Federal Railroad undertook in 1949 the first steps of offering high-quality train service again. Express trains were planned running at least at speeds of 100 to 120 kilometers per hour / 60 to 75 miles per hour. Higher speeds were not possible until the Sixties due to the roadbed and the available locomotive roster. The 54 remaining three-cylinder class 01.10 express steam locomotives were suddenly very much in demand with the introduction of a higher quality express train service. They were only ten years old and were modern locomotives in terms of their design. The DB thus had the streamlining removed from all of the 01.10 units and overhauled for express train service. The reasons for the complete removal of the streamlining on the boiler was the fact that the streamlining was very damaged and was superfluous, because they were no longer run at the high speeds for which these units had been designed. All of the class 01.10 locomotives were now given boiler cladding. Sheet metal cladding was built around the older design boiler and held in place with boiler bands. It was easy to recognize locomotives from the front with the older design boiler without streamlining: On a streamlined locomotive, the entire boiler superstructure was hidden under the streamlined shell. The feedwater heater sitting crosswise above the smoke box was thus recessed deeper in the smoke box and the smoke box door was flattened accordingly at the top. The class 01.10 locomotives were based mostly in Northern Germany. In 1950, the 54 locomotives for heavy express trains were based at four maintenance facilities: 19 in Hagen-Eckesey, 15 in Bebra, 12 in Kassel, and 8 in Paderborn. The locomotives kept the type 2’3 T38 five-axle tender, the older design boiler, and the original running gear. Road number 01 1088 based in Hagen-Eckesey is being realized as an H0 model in this condition. Remnants of the streamlining can still be seen on the model. Moreover, there are several features attributable to the conversion assigned to the Henschel repair workshop. Since the older design boiler was constructed of St 47 K steel, which was not resistant to aging, all of the class 01.10 locomotives were given high-performance boilers between 1953 and 1956 and they now clearly differed visually and technically from the original version. Oil firing was finally introduced on a large number of units.
Road number 01 1088 realized by Märklin in 2023 as an exclusive Club model with an older design boiler is thus new tooling and for the first time tells the history in model railroad technical terms of the famous class 01.10 in the transition from the streamlined locomotive to the locomotive with a new design boiler. The model (item number 39760, Trix item number 25011) of the Pacific locomotive, road number 01 1088, is constructed mostly of metal. Twenty-eight sound, light, and operating functions can be controlled using a digital decoder (Märklin: mfx+). The type 2’3 T38 five-axle tender is close coupled to the model, both with the buffer height adhering to the NEM (12.2 millimeters). An exclusive, six-part express train passenger car set (item number 42529, Trix item number 23629) looking as it did around 1951 is coming out to go with the locomotive. This car set represents a car family realized for the first time at Märklin: There are express train passenger cars for the standard design of 1928 to 1930, assigned to the application group 29. All six cars – among them a DSG dining car and a type Pw4ü-29 baggage car – are new tooling with LED interior lighting and multi-part interior details. The set includes day coaches for 3rd class, 1st/2nd class, and 1st/2nd/3rd class. |
