The operating association of the Southwest German Railways (SWDE) managed the state railways in the French Occupation Zone from 1947 to 1949. The states of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhenish-Palatinate), Südbaden (South Baden), and Württemberg-Hohenzollern introduced the railroad districts of Karlsruhe, Mainz, and Trier (as a substitute for Saarbrücken); the general administration was headquartered in Speyer. The German Federal Railroad originated from the railroads of the British-American Bi-Zone (Brit./US Zone) as early as 1949 of course; the SWDE was not fully incorporated into the DB until 1952.
