On the Way to the DB ... The operating association of the Southwest German Railways (SWDE) managed the state railways in the French Occupation Zone from 1947 to 1949. The states of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhenish-Palatinate), Südbaden (South Baden), and Württemberg-Hohenzollern introduced the railroad districts of Karlsruhe, Mainz, and Trier (as a substitute for Saarbrücken); the general administration was headquartered in Speyer. The German Federal Railroad originated from the railroads of the British-American Bi-Zone (Brit./US Zone) as early as 1949 of course; the SWDE was not fully incorporated into the DB until 1952. |
