Staiber Modellbau in Uetendorf (now ColorOne GmbH) was responsible for giving some locomotives a very special Swiss design, namely the cheese look.
In 1993, Märklin (or rather MHI) released the silver edition of the Re 460 (number 3461).
However, far too many models were produced, and the market did not accept them. Daniel Staiber, a pad printing specialist, reprinted this locomotive and it became the cheese locomotive 1. It was given the Märklin number 83461. The first series of 500 units was delivered in the original packaging of the 3461 with an 83461 number pasted over it.
The great success led to a second series of 2000 units being produced as a regular Märklin model with an almost correct Märklin box and the number 83461. The note almost correct has to be added because the picture of the packaging shows a model from series 1 and not 2. The difference between series 1 and 2 is that series 1 had oval holes on the right side of the drivers cab, with a slightly larger distance to the drivers cab window than series 2 with a round hole and only about 2 mm distance. |
